Power nozzles come in few different forms and are used for achieving better cleaning results while using on carpets (including upholstery).
They "beat" or loosen-up the carpet's surface, sometime quite deeply [depending on brand and type] by using the rotating brushes; this helps to loosen the dust, dirt or other particles, so that they can be sucked up with more ease.
The rotating brushes inside of power nozzles are driven by using two different methods:
1. By using the suction (air flow) directly from the vacuum
2. By using a dedicated motor of its own.
Other than removing dust/dirt from the carpets, the power nozzles are excellent for pet hair removing as well.
